Sometimes I just want to enthuse about art/movies/fandom/the weather/a nice tree I saw/how pumped up I am about a thing that really annoyed me. That’s not to say I don’t want to be critical, but I want this blog to be a place for the kind of gushy, handwavy, breathless joy I get from a variety of inconsequential things. And the kind of hopping, blind fury I get from being disappointed by something I wanted to enjoy.

My day ‘job’ (applying for postdocs) involves enough heavy critical lifting that I need a break occasionally. Nevertheless, the arts students’ powers don’t simply vanish when we put down the primary sources. So I might find myself over-thinking the use of the colour red in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, or clinging to John Darnielle’s description of the inspiration for a song because it sort of resembles the research I’ve been doing.

Also, because of a series of conversations with an old friend, I’ll be interrogating one of my worst habits. That is: working my way through an actor’s imdb backlist because they were Pretty Damned Hot in that one thing I saw recently. It’s not big, it’s not clever, it’s not noble, frankly … it’s led to me seeing a lot of godawful movies. And not even godawful in a fun way, like Christopher Lambert’s 1999 cyber-punk Beowulf. More like … Battlefield EarthAll About the Benjamins. The Matrix sequels.

But that’s not to say I don’t go to perfectly Worthy things as well. I’ve been lucky enough to see more art exhibitions this year than I’ve seen in ages, and I even made one of my biennial theatre trips recently. So there’ll be reviews of current releases as well as reviews of things I’m catching up on after the time. There’ll be a bit of everything, I hope.
